Lok Gathbandhan Party condemns Maharashtra govt for farmers suicides

Urban Mirror Correspondent

New Delhi, July 13: The Lok Gathbandhan Party (LGP) today condemned Maharashtra government for suicides of 1307 farmers during the last six months. Expressing concern over such a large number of deaths from January to June 2018, the LGP said the BJP government in the state is completely insensitive to the plight of farmers which has forced them commit suicide. The party said even last also 1398 farmers had killed themselves during the corresponding period.

The spokesman of the party said here on Friday that earlier this year in March thousands of farmers were forced to take out protest march from Nashik to Mumbai but these deaths indicated that the government has so far not taken any corrective measures to solve their problems.  The spokesman said this has badly exposed the false promise being made to farmers by the BJP.

The spokesman said that the farmers did not trust the NDA government’s assurance of doubling farm income through increase in minimum support prices (MSPs). The spokesman said that the NDA government’s promise of 50% return to farmers is misleading, as the role of MSPs is very limited in addressing the growing crisis in farm sector. The spokesman said the farmers problems are more or less same all over the country and the NDA government has done nothing except false promises during the last four years.

The spokesman said that farmers unrest is in fact result of years of governmental negligence towards their problems and quick fix solutions like loan waiver to help them out of prevalent crisis, is temporary. The spokesman said that NDA government has not taken the holistic view for solution to their distress. The party said farmers are most vulnerable community, depending entirely on various natural and man-made forces, for their sustenance. While over the years, the input cost of the farm produces has drastically gone up there has not been matching increase in their sale prices, which has ultimately forced the community into debt. The spokesman said, while the LGP is concerned about the lasting solution to farmers problems, other political parties are only interested in politicking and short-term populist measures, which would not defuse the crisis. The party said there was an urgent need to devise policies to enhance overall farm income and pave way for non-farm jobs in rural sector. (Credit images: livemint.com, ndtv.com, maeeshat.in)
