New Delhi, May 5: The Lok Gathbandhan Party (LGP) today assailed both the BJP and Congress for not offering a viable solution to the problems of farmers in Karnataka. The party said both parties as quick fix solution have promised loan waivers of farmers in their assembly election manifesto in Karnataka.
The spokesman of the LGP said here on Saturday such a lackadaisical approach in solving the mounting problems of farmers could never yield positive results in the long run. After UP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Punjab, Karnataka will be the fifth states where loan waiver for the farmers has been offered, the spokesman said, adding loan waiving is a temporary measures which the Congress and BJP have resorted to get political support of the farming community. The spokesman said the way agrarian crises have assumed serious dimension over the years, such piecemeal steps are entirely directionless. The spokesman said the fifth monetary policy of the reserve bank of India too had indicated about distress of the farmers because of slowdown in rural wages largely because of demonetization in November 2016.
The spokesman said loan waiving plan is absolutely lopsided and directionless. The spokesman said it would not at all help the farmers who are reeling under immense financial problems for various reasons. The spokesman said instead of such scheme the state governments should at least once free the farmers from their indebtedness. The spokesman said in case of loan waiving in UP, the state government had offered conditional waivers which could not cover the entire farming community. The spokesman said resentment is brewing among the farmers over various issues all over the country. The spokesman said the LGP believes in at least one time full waiver accompanied by well-thought out agriculture policy to keep away the community from further loan trouble.
The spokesman prevailing farmers’ unrest is the result of years of governmental negligence towards their problems and following only quick fix solution like loan waiver to help them out of crisis temporarily. The LGP said that neither the past nor the present central government ever took a holistic view of solution to their distress. The party said farmers are most vulnerable community depending on various natural and man-made forces for sustenance. While over the years the input cost of the farm produce has drastically gone up, there has not been matching increase in sale prices which has forced the community into debt. The spokesman said in the other sector market players are able to fix the prices of their production, but the farmers are always dependent on the government remunerative prices which are mismatch.
