Lok Gathbandhan Party condemns Bihar Govt for sexual abuse in girls shelter home

New Delhi, July 31: The Lok Gathbandhan Party today held Nitish Kumar government squarely responsible for sexual abuse at the government-funded shelter home for destitute girls in Muzaffarpur in Bihar. The party said such a heinous crime of sexual violence was not possible for a long time without the knowledge of the state government and the chief minister Nitish Kumar owes and explanation to the people as all these years he had been at the helms of affairs.
The Spokesman of the LGP said here on Tuesday that all the criminals involved in the violence enjoyed governmental patronage because they were politically well connected through their media house. The spokesman said state-funded NGO Seva Sankalp evam Vikas Samiti had been running the racket for several years under the nose of the government officers who turned Nelson’s eye to the issue. According to information 34 of the 44 inmates were found to have suffered severe sexual abuse at the time of Tata Institute for Social Sciences (TISS) audit of the home a few months back. This is one of the 110 shelter houses in which TISS found a history of abuse. The spokesman thus said the state government cannot escape the responsibility from the crime just by ordering a CBI probe and an independent high level investigation is required to fix the responsibility at the higher level. The complicity of the Nitish government could be gauged from the fact that the accused was also chairperson of child welfare committee, the spokesman said and added that the shelter home was running without any accountability either in their finances or their ability ensure welfare of the inmates. The spokesman also assailed the BJP and especially the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping stoic silence on the issue for political reason.
The spokesman said at a time when the NDA government has been raising Beti Bachao slogan, the revelation in Muzaffarpur shelter home has badly exposed the BJP’s hallowness for its concern for the girls. The spokesman said with protectors turning predators in the shelters, there is need for regular social audits in homes for destitute girls. The spokesman said had it not been the TISS audit the prevailing situation in the shelter home might never have come to light. (Credit Representational Image: India Today)
